ELCT Retrospective

Before we were The Curtainless Theatre, we were known as the East Lansing Community Theatre. Scroll down to take a look at the the shows we produced under that name! The Tempest (William Shakespear) - September 2017 Rehearsals for The Tempest began in summer 2017 and performances ran September 14-17 and 21-24, 2017 at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center’s Albert A. White auditorium. The production was directed by Mike Stewart, who also designed the lights, sets, and props, with costumes and assistant directorship provided by Helen Hart and Holly Engler working on props. The cast included Steve Ledyard, Chanae Houska, Sarah Smite (nee Houck), Ann Marie Foley, Mark Polzin, Iszy Correia, Dale Wayne Williams, Kris Vitols, Jackie Payne, Iris Paul, Logan Kilpelä, Leo Poroshin, Samantha Stanton, Suzanne MacLaren, Holly Engler, and Tim Lewis. By: Kris Vitols Even when I don’t write I remain a writer, and a writer who does not write is, admittedly, an aberrant being who courts madness.                        ---Franz Kafka, journal entry, 1922 So we begin with Franz Kafka, who wished for the entirety of his literary output to be consigned to flame, before dying a most grisly death by galloping consumption. Grisly death aside, Kafka’s journal entry is instructive, presenting us with the thrumming, suppurating mind of the tortured writer, so hyper-aware of itself that the very act of writing is a soporific against madness. Kafka seemed to have a special genius for doubt and misprision -- the level of despair and derision encountered in his journals being so acute, at times, one wonders how the man ever wrote anything at all. But write he did, even when he wasn’t putting pen to paper, his mind on fire with words, phrases, scenarios, aphoristic bits of wisdom that read like the ravings of a doomed prophet. Such was Kafk
